Shelltoe Systems: Litefeet Culture 2010-2025 is a visual tribute to the Harlem-born,Uptown-cultivated dance subculture that is warmly embraced by New Yorkers and boasts its status as a recognized Street Dance form practiced on many continents. I choose the title Shelltoe Systems to illuminate a contradiction around Litefeet; the kicks that built the systems that continue to sustain the dance form and community look like dirty Adidas Superstars to outsiders. To the Litefeet community, those same shoes are called Shelltoes or 40 Cals and they’re legendary performance props that enable practitioners to innovate footwork and shoe tricks juggle & create new sculptural forms while dancing.
